You have successfully applied for Coast Guard documentation for your vessel. This means that you have completed all the forms and received a certificate of documentation. After all that hard work, you may be very disappointed to discover that the documentation is only valid for a year. Each year, you will receive notification that your USCG renewal is due, and you will have a limited amount of time in which to replace that paperwork. If you are still operating the vessel commercially, and want to continue to do so, you can choose to automatically renew it for five consecutive years. After that, you must renew from the beginning.
Why Choose To Continue With The Registration?
Most countries around the world require their maritime ports to register vessels which are regularly docked there. A certificate of documentation is a very traditional part of government, and provides evidence of your nationality and the boat’s country of origin, which can be very useful if you ever stopped in international waters. A certificate of documentation is vital if you intend to travel across the world, and it can also be important when you are discussing taxation with your state.
