As a new boat owner, you need to be aware of the laws and regulations governing your use of boats within US waters. One of the most important rules that you must follow is the required Vessel Documentation. This is a very old regulation, and one which is strictly demanded from the government. Completing your US Coast guard registration of vessels will allow you to have unhindered movement through our waters, and will establish your rights to use the boat.
Completing Vessel Documentation
In order to establish your ownership and use of the boat, you must submit the documentation required to establish the ownership and use of the boat, and its right to travel through US waters. If you have a ship which is over 5 net tons, and is engaged in fishing, coast-wise trade or similar business in US waters, then you will have to register the ship with the coastguard. Even if your boat is not 5 tons, but operates as a towboat or dredger, then you will still have to register.
Documenting Your Vessel
There are a few different types of documentation available for boat owners operating in US waters. The most important difference is between those who are using their boat for leisure and recreational reasons, as opposed to those using it for trading. Ships which have endorsement for recreational reasons may not be used for other forms of trading, including fishing and coastwise. The latter boats with the Certificate of Documentation may be used for recreational reasons. A registry endorsement will usually only apply to boats for foreign trade.
